SADIE HAWKINS 2010 'The Sadie Hawkins Dance in my khaki pants. There's nothing better, oh oh oh!' Relient K poured through the DJ's speakers. The DJ himself was decked out in proper Western attire - beige cowboy boots, dark denim jeans, red plaid shirt, and a cowboy hat. From the way he was raising the roof with his left hand and bobbing with the tune, it was obvious he was used to the bumpin' grooves of Hip Hop. The DJ station itself was even decked out, nestled underneath a cardboard barn. Tonight UNC exchanged the bump and grind for line dancing, hoochie skirts for plaid. After all, it was the fifth annual Sadie Hawkins dance, and no one wanted to look like an outcast.
The UNC Great Hall looked like a Western movie threw up all over it. The typical, delicate decorations were no where to be found. Blue table clothes were exchanged for picnic table cloths. Smack dab in the center of the tables were cowboy boot and hay centerpieces. For those who already arrived at the dance, they could be seen holding plastic cowboy boots filled with various soft drinks and punch, or maybe carrying a plate filled with southern classics - biscuits, chicken, and salads. In corners you could see bales of hay, faux cactuses, and several stuffed chickens and roosters. For those who had yet to enter the transformed hall, they would enter under a cowboy boot archway that was completely decked out with balloons. If you felt like dancin', you could go to the wide open dance floor that was ready for line dancing, slow dancing, and hip swinging of all sorts. Don't worry about not being the center of attention! The tables surrounded the dance floor in a large horseshoe set up. If you wanted to take a break from dancing, not to worry! You could stroll over to the corner of the hall and get your photo taken at the ranch photo backdrop.
With folks walking in at a considerable amount now that the dance was in full swing, the DJ made a smooth transition into a song by Will Smith. Although it was a country themed dance, there was a little something for everyone. Line dances, country, pop, and R&B - there was variety for every guy and gal. With almost five hours until the dance would end, it looked like it would be a fun and interesting hoedown for the students of UNC.
